History of Asian Antique

An antique is an extremely old, rare item that is considered to be collectible today. People collect these items specifically because they are so old and rare, and because these items are often considered to be beautiful, useful, and unique. Some people collect art pieces because they are emotionally connected to a certain time period or geographical area.

Usually an item is considered to be an antique if it is over 100 years old. Some people define today’s collectibles that are less than 100 years old as the antiques of the future, and therefore they collect them as well. Most pieces show great craftsmanship or design. They can be purchased at antique shops. Sometimes they are passed through family generations. There are also antique websites where you can purchase antiques online.

Museums use plenty of antiques in their displays in order to convey accurate information about certain time periods or lifestyles in the past. Basically any item is considered to be an antique if it survives long enough, but in the antiquing marketplace, an acceptable antique is based on its popular appeal, visual appeal, and social acceptability.

Antiquing is the act of shopping, searching, and negotiating for antiques. It has become a real hobby among many Americans today. One of the more popular types of antiques that people look for are Chinese antiques. Asian antique furniture, specifically Chinese furniture, are extremely popular today. People will negotiate great prices for a Chinese antique cabinet, for example, or dining tables, bureaus, chests, chairs, screens, and stools.

In antique Chinese furniture the most common wood used is Elm. Elm is found in most regions able to sustain trees. Sometimes different types of wood are used in Chinese antiques. Each wood has its own distinctive grain and colour. Many modern pieces of furniture often use laminate or wood veneer in order to get the look of antiques without the price tag. These are called reproduction antiques. There are a number of different styles of Asian antique furniture depending on when and where in Asia it was made. Asian antiques can be found in a small number of US antique stores, but are more often found in online stores, because antique dealers can purchase directly from Asia and have the item shipped to you. Some dealers also travel to Asia regularly to acquire authentic antique Chinese furniture and other Asian antiques.
